February 2: World Wetlands Day
Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The World Wetlands Day (WWD) is celebrated every year on 2 February to commemorate the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971.
The theme for 2017 “Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction” emphasizes the importance of these ecosystems as a natural, effective and less costly solution than other hard measures taken to reduce disaster risk and the effects of climate change.
The Ramsar Convention Secretariat carries out the day-to-day coordination of the Convention's activities. The offices are co-located with IUCN (the International Union for the Conservation of Nature) in Gland, Switzerland, which provides some supporting services to the Convention and Secretariat staff are legally considered to be employees of IUCN.
