Tunisia-FAO: cooperation agreement to develop water-harvesting techniques

A draft agreement of technical cooperation for the development of water-harvesting techniques for sustainable agriculture and improving the resilience of the southeast region of Tunisia (Governorates of Gabes, Medenine and Tataouine), was signed on Monday in Tunis between Tunisia and the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO).

The 476,000-dollar project, funded by the FAO, aims to promote the collection of water, through a participatory approach by integrating local stakeholders in each region concerned by the project, Bougacha Ahmed, FAO's Assistant Representative in Tunisia told TAP, on the occasion of the inauguration of the new headquarters of the FAO Sub-Regional Office for North Africa and the World Food Day 2016.

The FAO Representative in Tunisia and Coordinator of the FAO Sub-Regional Office for North Africa, Lamourdia Thiombiano said that the two-year project is part of the fight against water scarcity and seeks the best use of rainwater in the aforementioned regions, reminding that this year's World Food Day is dedicated to the analysis of the evolution of food and agriculture to address the adverse effects of climate change.
