Brachoua: the winning bet of permaculture

Three years ago, Had Brachoua, a small village of the outskirts of Rabat, was still suffering from a great precariousness, without water, nor electricity. At present, the village is reborn and found itself a calling. The problems, related to the access to water or electricity, are from now on a thing of the past. What did change in the daily life of the residents of the village? They opted for permaculture!

Brachoua is a small village located at 50 km from Rabat. It houses about 60 families living from agriculture, livestock and rural tourism. The village was subject to an increased development during the last three years thanks to the creation of vegetable gardens and a women’s cooperative in the region. This initiative turned fruitful despite the uncertainties of the beginning. It had a more than satisfactory result, proving that sustainable development is not just a word.

The fruitful experience of Brachoua, which faced the socio-economic imbalances, found echo among among the community of the more and more eminent of permaculture’s adepts, which earned to the inhabitants the interest of a great Belgian newspaper which came to relate the success of the locals.
