Agriculture in Tunisia: a difficult season

The month of September marks a difficult 2015/2016 agricultural season that is ending and a new season that will start in Tunisia.

The agricultural sector is undoubtedly the weak link of the value chain this year and continues to drive economic growth down. The decline in production of olive oil has greatly harmed agricultural production and at the same the country's economic growth.

According to the National Statistics Institute (INS) , a decrease of 3.6% of the sector's value added was recorded at the end of the second quarter of the current year and a fall of 35.1% in exports value and volume of the agricultural and food industries has been observed in the month of July 2016 against a respective increase of 118.6 % and 85.6 % a year earlier.
