Women, food, and climate
Women play vital roles in agriculture globally, as farmers, harvesters, processors, and consumers. As the world gets hotter and rainfall more erratic, the agriculture sector is often the hardest hit, and women are usually the first to feel these impacts.
As agricultural production declines and food sources become more insecure, women’s role as the family’s food providers, and their responsibility to secure water, food, and fuel for cooking and heating are being affected. They are spending an ever-increasing amount of time in search of ever-scarcer resources. To achieve food and nutritional security, these factors must be taken into account. Climate-resilient responses cannot be limited by gender-based constraints.
